Battle of the Liquid Lipsticks!! Anastasia Beverly Hills, Lime Crime, Kat Von D, etc.

I decided to do a comparison of all the liquid lipsticks I own - a battle of some sort.

These are the competitors:
  • Anastasia Beverly Hills Pure Hollywood Liquid Lipsticks ($20)
  • Makeup Academy Liquid Lipstick ($9)
  • Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick ($20)
  • Sephora Rouge Infusion Lip Stain ($14)
  • Lime Crime Velvetines ($20)
As you can see, some are high end and some you can find for a reasonable price. I'm going to do a mini review on each and compare them!

ABH Pure Hollywood Liquid Lipsticks has a high price for the product you get in my opinion. They are $20 a pop and can find them on the ABH website. I have three colors: Heathers, American Doll and Sweet Talker.

This is what the packaging and applicator look like. The dove foot picks up enough product - you don't have to keep dipping.

Swatches of the three colors:

I find that Heathers and American Doll have a great formula. They go on smooth and don't settle into the lines on my lips or feather during the day. However, Sweet Talker is so difficult to apply and settles into the lines of my lips. It is extremely streaky and I find it extremely hard to apply an even layer.

The other problem I have with the formula of these products is that they easily rub off when you are eating/drinking. Anything oily will take these right off of your lips but only on the inside ring. It ends up looking really weird because the inner portion of your lip color is gone but the outside remains pigmented. They are also very drying and smell slightly plastic-y. Overall - not worth the price tag.

Makeup Academy Liquid Lipsticks are only $9 at CVS. I initially just bought one, swatched it and literally ran back to the store to buy three more. Here is the packaging and the applicators.

After a few uses every. single. applicator completely got messed up. As you can see they are all funky and pointing in a million different ways. The first one I bought was Magenta and the applicator is still pretty manageable but I don't use these anymore because it isn't worth the effort to bring in a separate brush. I was pretty annoyed once they went bad because I wasn't able to return them so it ended up being a complete waste of money.

If the applicators didn't mess up I would love these products. They smell minty, which doesn't offend me in the slightest - I love that smell, and are pretty thick so they end up lasting hours. I store my lipsticks standing up so I put a small amount of product on the top and trapped it with some tape. Looks a little ghetto but it lets me see the exact color of these products.

Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks are $20 and you can purchase them at Sephora. The formula is super thing and liquidy. A warning on this product!! I absolutely HATE the packaging. I once tipped the tube over slightly and the product spilled all over my vanity. It was super messy and hard to clean up. You also cannot store this product side ways or even carry it in your purse because it leaks out through the lid and the tube. Other than that, I love this product! This is the color Outlaw.

The product is very thin and goes on evenly with no streaks and dries matte on your lips but does not feel uncomfortable. Smells a little chemically but the pigmentation is 10 out of 10 and lasts at least 7 hours on me without needing a touch up. Once it dries it's there for good!

Sephora Rouge Infusion Lip Stain ($14) can be found at Sephora - shocker, I know. The smell is chemically with a hint of vanilla but is not very strong. The formula is perfect at first - thin but pigmented, not streaky and very even. BUT within a few short hours the product almost disintegrates on my lips. I have never had this happen to me before but the way this product wears is so bizarre. It clumps, disappears and looks really bad. I would never recommend this product - but I have heard that Sephora's other lip products are awesome so I haven't lost hope on the Sephora brand at all. This is #11 Ruby Extract.

Last but not least, Lime Crime Velvetines. You can find these at the Lime Crime website. These are $20 each and hands down the winner of this competition. They are super pigmented, go on smoothly, and stay all day no matter what. Once they set they can feel pretty dry throughout the day but it's worth it if I want a product to look amazing in photos, not bleed or feather, and last over 12 hours. I absolutely love them and there is nothing I can say negative. This is the shade Red Velvet.

As you can see below, all of the red are extremely similar. I would say stick to Lime Crime or Kat Von D for the better formulas!

  1. I'm disappointed to hear about the Kat Von D messiness problem because I really wanted to try them but I'm glad I know now coz I couldnt go anywhere without whatever lipstick Im wearing in my bag! We have MUA in the UK and Ireland but Ive never seen those liquid lipsticks, sounds awful about the applicators but they have these new(ish) ones called Luxe Velvet lip lacquers and they are amazing (and have a normal applicator!) I would highly recommend those if you were to continue adding to your liquid lipstick collection :)
