Cover FX Custom Cover Drops ($44)

Cover FX has released an 'innovative' new product called "Custom Cover Drops". The idea is that you can add these drops to a number of different mediums to create your custom color. You can add them to moisturizer, sunscreen, serum or even a foundation in order to provide the coverage you desire. This has a very liquidy consistency and is packed with concentrated pigment that allows you to add coverage or customize the level of tint.

There are an astounding 24 shades that range from light to dark in 3 categories (cool, neutral and warm).

The packaging is a black glass bottle and has a dropper as the applicator. There is a small teardrop window that shows exactly what color it contains. I think the packaging is sleek, simple and perfect for what it contains; it's not too oversized.

There is a slight smell to it - I can't pinpoint exactly what it is though. The smell is not overly offensive in any way. You basically have to put the dropper up to your nose to detect anything. I don't smell anything when applying it.

One concern would be with traveling. I haven't personally had any issues with the product getting on the outside of the bottle but I can definitely see it happening with enough use. Once you unscrew the bottle it is completely covered with product (as well as very liquidy) so you need to be careful with opening and closing it.

This is what Sephora has about this product:
From a sheer tint to total coverage, Custom Cover Drops lets you achieve your desired coverage. Blend it with anything liquid to create your desired coverage, including moisturizers, serums, oils, primers, foundations, and tinted moisturizers that are water-, oil-, or silicone-based. These revolutionary drops feature Flash Fusion Technology™, so as soon as you drop, it leaves behind pigment that weightlessly transforms your favorite beauty product into the sheerest tint or a total coverage foundation. Simply adjust your coverage by the number of drops you add. The pigments are coated with lecithin, which is biochemically similar to the skin, to ensure seamless blending, precise control, and the smoothest application.

I've tried this product two different ways: with my moisturizer and in conjunction with one of my foundations.

With the moisturizer it became a sheer almost BB like consistency. It easily mixes into the lotion and gave more coverage as I added more drops.

I like more full coverage on my skin and so I thought that using it to help lighten/darken my already medium foundations would work better for me. When I tried to lighten one of my foundations it did the trick. Again, it easily mixed in and helped me to change a shade of something I already owned.

My only issue is that it was clear that this product is not for people with dry skin. I have oily/normal skin but have small dry spots right next to my nose and this product really emphasized those. I definitely would steer clear of this if you are dry or have any dry patches.

The degree of pigmentation in each drop is very significant so applying this straight to skin is extremely unnatural looking. I wouldn't recommend that even if you are looking for full coverage. This product is meant to be mixed with another medium and looks best when done that way

As a side note, I think that this is pretty pricey for what you get as well. It's $44 for only .5 fl oz. A regular foundation (drugstore and high-end) typically contains at least 1 fl oz. While this is expensive you don't use too much product (1-3 drops) every time you use it so the bottle will last a good amount of time.

If you are looking for more coverage in a foundation or to create your own tinted moisturizer I think this is a fun and effective product to help you do so.
